100 recognized at
Annual Awards Banquet
|

The Alamo chapter
honored approximately 100 civilians, enlisted
members and officers at its
Kellogg-Loos Awards Banquet. The annual civilian
and military awards banquet was held at the
Lackland Air Force Base Gateway Club on March 19.
The chapter recognized the top Airmen in nine
categories from Randolph AFB, Lackland AFB, Brooks
City base and the local community.
The banquet was
dedicated to the memories of Col (Ret) Joe Kellogg and Charlotte and Carlton Loos. These three life-long AFA volunteers played a very active role in defining the Alamo Chapter as it exists today. Col James Kellogg, Joe Kellog's son, presented the Blue Suit awards and was assisted by General Stephen Lorenz, Commander, Air Education and Training Command, and Chapter president, Gary Copsey.
The final part of
the awards ceremony was reserved for the Alamo
Chapter awards during which the chapter recognized
its member of the year, officer of the year,
Airman of the year, and others. The final
presentation honored the 2008 Earl North Parker
Essay Contest winner, Alicia A. Perez.
The chapter
extends a special thanks to all of the volunteers,
community partners, and sponsors who made the
event possible.

Civilians during the event at Randolph in
recognition of their hard work. The general

Tribute to Ed Kirkham,
past Alamo Chapter
President |
|
|
|
Former chapter president
Edward E. Kirkham passed from this world
Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009 at the age of 66 after a
courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Kirkham was born July 25, 1942 in Goose Creek,
Texas, now part of Baytown, Texas. The son of
Edward E. Kirkham and Lois Hoot Kirkham, Ed was
a retired Lieutenant Colonel who flew with the
Texas Air National Guard for over 25 years. He
worked as an engineer at Kelly AFB in San
Antonio for 33 years. Upon retirement, Kirkham
spent the last years of his life as a full time
Recreational Vehicle enthusiast and is said to
have dedicated his heart and his service to the
Lord.
| |
He is survived by his wife,
Elaine Berreth Kirkham of San Antonio, Texas and
Eureka, South Dakota, and his sister, Sophia
Kirkham Lyons of Austin, Texas as well as three
children and seven grandchildren: his daughter
Kimberly and Dan McAdams of College Station and
their children Clair and Graham; daughter Kerri
and Tom Wise of Austin and their children Kaylee,
Lily, and Molly; and son Edward (Kirk) E. Kirkham
III and Jennifer Kirkham of San Antonio and their
children Jack and Eva. Ed was preceded in death by
his parents.
|
A memorial service was held at
the First Baptist Church of New Braunfels on
Monday, Feb. 9 at 10:30 am. A fellowship gathering
was held at the church immediately following the
service. The family will also place a memorial
marker at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in
San Antonio. Memorial donations may be made in Ed
Kirkham’s memory to the charity or church of your
choice, or to either Texas Baptist Men at www.texasbaptistmen.org
or to the Little Rock Chapel, P.O Box 420,
Bulverde, TX 78163.

Where do we want to
be in five or ten years? A better question might
be, where are we right now? Your Alamo Chapter
is at a crossroads and we can continue on our
merry way or take a turn to becoming something
that all chapters should aspire to. That is,
having both the manpower and the means to
achieving AFA’s goals locally. I feel truly
blessed to be at that crossroads: because of a
superb working relationship with local Air Force
senior leaders, community partners and sponsors,
we have built the capability to have an
Aerospace Education Foundation that is the envy
of every chapter.
| |
|
We have a
solid financial base and a dedicated group of
people working to ensure we are making the most of
our resources through scholarships, grants, awards
and recognition programs for our American Airmen,
their families, and those who aspire to help
maintain the U.S. as the leader in Air, Space and
Cyber power.
OK, so we
have the Aerospace Education piece down pretty
well. That part about making the turn to achieve
success is aimed at where we need to be going.
Without the dedicated efforts of those who have a
passion for our Air Force and the future of our
nation, the chapter could easily wander down a
path with no clear destination. But, with those
people (you?), we can make a difference.
|
|
Do you want to make a
difference?
Then join
us. If you are a member and just get your magazine
every month, you might think about what else you
can do. It doesn’t matter who you are: active,
reserve, guard, retired, civil servant, or have
nothing to do with the Air Force except wanting it
to succeed; we need you and your ideas, and
especially your dedication.
Contact any
of the chapter officers through the Contacts link
on our Web page. We’d love to have you and promise
to get you involved at a level you feel
comfortable with.
