AFA Humvee "floats" on SA Riverwalk at annual Fiesta
The Alamo Chapter and the Civil Air Patrol squadrons from Lackland and Randolph shared a Humvee "float" at the annual Fiest Flambeau Parade, Saturday, April 25 as part of San Antonio's Fiesta Celebration.
Alamo Chapter's Eric Renth partnered with SMSgt Annie Howell from the 433rd Airlift Wing to arrange for the Humvee and work out the details for the parade.
Thirty CAP cadets, under the command of 1st Lt Paul Rojas, marched in "America's largest nighttime parade" while Maj Francis Roberston drove the Humvee. Half a million spectators gathered to watch the parade and an additional 1.5 million viewers watched on television.
The parade had a Las Vegas theme and featured local groups from around the U.S. This was a great publicity event for the AFA and CAP.
Special thanks to Eric Renth, Maj Francis Roberston, Maj Bob Howard, Lt Rojas, and SMSgt Annie Howell for your work in making this happen!!

Spending some time reflecting over the 4th of July weekend, I thought about a lot of the patriotic emails and messages floating around. One was about how “freedom isn’t free.” The men and women who have served or are now serving as well as their families know that better than anyone.
I started thinking about how those three words have so much relevance to our Air Force today. If you have been keeping up with the emails and other messages coming out of AFA Headquarters, you should have noted that the Air Force is taking a beating in the budget arena. Many future programs have been slashed or cancelled, and the USAF has been accused of “worrying too much about next-war-itis.” The bill to pay for current operations is apparently eroding our ability to plan and fund the future of our security posture, which is linked directly to the ability of airpower (and let’s add space and cyber to that) to stay ahead of the power curve for maintaining air supremacy. | |
We have enjoyed air supremacy since the Korean War…but it wasn’t cheap. We learned the hard way by not planning for the eventuality of US involvement in WWII. Leaders like Billy Mitchell had it right but no one at the top was listening.
Are we headed that way again?
Do we need to fight the battles on the Hill all over again to show the value of airpower and the need to maintain a service that is focused on that realm?
Freedom truly isn’t free; and if we don’t plan for the future it will be even costlier. We don’t have the ability to rapidly spin up as we did in the 1940’s. It is up to all of us who cherish our freedom to ensure we are not leaving it up to a future generation to figure it out. We need to plan and prepare now for the unknown future.
Freedom isn’t free, but it will be even more expensive in many ways if we fail to take a strategic view.
